AI Overviews: What Changes for Local Restaurants
Updated on 7 September 2026
AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary Google displays at the top of some search results, above the classic links. For a local restaurant, the main effect isn't a new technical box to check — it's that Google keeps relying on the same fundamentals (useful content, clear structure, crawler accessibility) it has recommended for classic SEO all along.
What Google officially says
Google has publicly confirmed that no special format, no llms.txt file, no dedicated schema is needed to appear in AI Overviews. Content that ranks well in organic search generally has a good chance of performing well in AI Overviews — both largely rely on the same quality and relevance signals.
What actually changes for a local search
For a query like "best Italian restaurant in Denver", an AI Overview can now appear above the traditional Local Pack (the block of 3 listings with a map). That adds a step before the user reaches classic results — and so an additional exit point if the generated answer already satisfies them without a click.
What this implies: the same factors that determine a good Local Pack position (prominence, reviews, category relevance — see local SEO for restaurants: the complete guide) also influence the likelihood of being cited in an AI Overview, since Google draws on the same local data sources to build both.
What not to conclude from this
It would be a mistake to think there's a distinct "AI Overviews optimization" to layer on top of classic local SEO. There's no special field or markup reserved for this feature. The effort stays the same: a complete listing, plenty of recent reviews, clear and well-structured content.
One thing to watch: fewer clicks, not less existence
Like other AI summary formats, an AI Overview can answer the user's question without them needing to click through to your listing or website. That doesn't mean your presence served no purpose — being the cited source in the answer is still a form of visibility, even without measurable clicks, similar to a mention without a link in a ChatGPT answer (see the three levels detailed in get your restaurant recommended by ChatGPT).
